Book Reviews ~ Plan2Win@Parenting: Different tools for different times

As a mother of three married daughters and grandmother to nine, I can certainly identify with this helpful handbook on how to rear children. Author Erika Joseph includes some excellent suggestions such as establishing behavioral guidelines and the use of role playing. I also like the fact that she includes suggested reading and videos at the end of some chapters in order for the parent to tap into other resources to gain more knowledge and insight on childrearing habits.

In her introductory, this author eloquently states that she was raised with a fear/fright type of strategy. It seems that she then did her fair share of investigating so as not to repeat history by using these same unacceptable disciplinary tools. I commend her for doing her background checks and identifying with the stand “different tools for different times” that she incorporates into this booklet.

I also commend her for stating that the method she has chosen for raising her child, is not the only successful way to raise a child…which shows her openness to discussing the other successful methods parents may have discovered in raising their own children. This sense of open-mindedness is part of her whole philosophy. I certainly like the idea that it is wise to establish ground rules, sound morals and values, as well as the lead by example technique. She also states that it is okay to say “no” when raising children. There are plenty of great tips in this book for parents of younger children as they start off on this incredible and sometimes frustrating journey. The art of being a parent is no easy task…however, it is one of the most rewarding gifts when, we as parents, get to reap the benefits of a job well done!
